The movie is beloved for its lavish costumes, memorable music, and the charming performances of Audrey Hepburn (as Eliza Doolittle) and Rex Harrison (as Phonetics Professor Henry Higgins). It was adapted from the long-running Broadway musical My Fair Lady and proved to be a great popular and critical success. It was a critical and commercial success winning eight Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Rex Harrison.

Higgins makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can transform Eliza into a proper lady by teaching her how to speak and act like a member of high society. Eliza undergoes this transformation and she and Higgins develop a complicated and often contentious relationship.
